This years Bygone Days event for 2010 was spread over a weekend of August. Although the weather was little troublesome on the Saturday, Sunday turned out excellent with glorious sunshine. Both days produced very light winds directly down the flying field.
Saturday with rather grey clouds in the sky saw Jon Tappin, experienced display and aerobatic pilot put his Hangar 9 Extra through it's paces.
No smoke this year he said - causes no end of problems sometimes!
Powered by a twin air-cooled two stroke petrol engine the torque from this power plant can easily hang the whole aircraft from it's prop. Aka, torque-hanging!

It must be 65 years since the Dorset skies saw a me109 overhead. My grandmother used to tell me that she used to watch them dogfighting over Boscombe where she lived. She even had a 20mm spent shell as an ornament - it came thorugh the roof of her cottage!
Anyway back to today. Although a few little details needed doing it was time for Willy's maiden flight. The day started off lovely, blue skies, high white cirrus clouds but by early afternoon the cloud had become near 98%, low and the temperature dropped somewhat in the breezy EastSoutherly.
All was ready after some field adjustments, tightening bolts, etc. With an inverted engine I found it easier to start the motor withthe plane inverted therefore the engine is upright. Once started and warmed up a little she would start again the right way up. Dual rates checked. High at 100% with 45% expo and low rates at 70%, 45% expo. Range checked and found to be good.
Some members had got their cameras at the ready, myself with videocam and our test pilot, Pete Mumford on the sticks. With the engine running the aircraft was placed the right way up after starting and idling nicely.
Much to everyones delight Dave Roger's P40 Tomahawk was displayed flying at Bygone Days 2010 event at Ibsley in the New Forest, England.
A replica 60 size model though! Pete Mumford one of our excellent pilots whose popular pastime is entering into Aerobatic competitions put the Tomahawk through scale-like flying displays.
This was to be one of two flights for this model, the other coming later with a formation flight with two P51D Mustangs. As you can hear by the chatter and laughter in the background and to the delight of the other pilots stood on the flight line.
The model is powered by a two stroke glow engine and has had quite a few outings up at our field in Dorset. This model can also be seen doing "Bomb Drops" too. The explosion is simulated by fine flour and gives a reasonable effect.
Following on from Warbirds Over Ibsley video this version shows some of the clips that were left out plus the highlights of the warbird flights including some extra footage.
For the scale model pilots this was an exciting and fun flight and for the owners of the models too! Jon, Pete and Dave had not actually flown in formation before, well not as three but had done some various pairs before at our flying site Cashmoor. So it was a "well done" for them for creating a spectacular scale flying display.
The Tomahawk in camouflage colours and Flying Tiger motifs is a Black Horse model powered by a two stroke glow engine and owned by Dave Rogers. The Blue-Nosed P51D Mustang is a Hangar 9 model owned by Simon Dean and four stroke Saito powered. The Red Spinnered Mustang is a Ripmax model, hand launched with a wingspan of 48 inches. It is powered by a Emax 500 watt motor and 3 cell LiPo.
The Red Spinner Mustang could keep up with Blue Nosed Mustang but both would fall behind speedwise with the Tomahawk. But from the ground you can't really tell any difference so alls well then!
Filmed at Bygone Days event August 2010 on the Sunday of the weekend 7th & 8th August. Although there were some big grey clouds at times the day remained dry and virtually no wind.
There was a larger than Saturday attendance of visitors which is expected. Over the course of the afternoon all were treated to some full size displays of aircraft and a near continuous display of model flying too by WimborneMac and Salisbury club.
So, to the video. Jon Tappin, Pete Mumford both experienced display and aerobatic pilots were joined this time by the outstanding Dave Bright who had successfully passed his "B" Cert earlier in the year. Dave was a little daunted by flying publicly for the first time but he soon settled in and the three pilots took off together to do some awesome formation flying.
