EDF & Turbine Day

Latest News

breitling edfThe very last official Club Event was held on the 29th October 2011.  This was dedicated to EDF's (Electric Ducted Fan) and Jet Turbines.  The weather was somewhat unpredictable as usual, just recently weeks of high winds and sudden showers.

However, the event went ahead on a some sunshine but cloudy day anyway.  As is per normal our event organiser, James was up there early to set fire to the BBQ, which takes half-hour to get going.  Chuck some glow fuel on it James, that should do it!

Althought the turnout was not exceptional quite a number of members came with their oldest or newest EDF foamies.  What would we do without Hong Kong?  On the turbine side only one jet arrived, David Tappin's Boomerang.  After having the turbine and engine management control sent away for checks and succesfully firng up at home, on arriving at Cashmoor the ECU was having none of it, again!  Poor David!

Still, the bacon rolls later followed by sausages and burgers helped keeping us going whilst the foamies batteries were being charged up prior to battle in the skies.

Meanwhile, while the field was clear time to have some fun.  Zagi towing.  With the wind really picking up straight down the field from the SW quite possibly get some good duration flights.  Although we thought "Birthday Boy" Dave Rogers would be tops, we were amazed that Graham had the best duration, virtually making a complete circuit within the field before running out of lift and speed.  Fluke?  Twice?  Looks like it!  In the photo it looks like an Alien spacecraft has just lasered the car!

With batteries fully charged time for some Cold War sorties.  About nine were launched on the first flight, one ditching immediatlely, F4's, Brietling L39, Mig's and more.  Big Dave floated in last,  surviving near misses and declared himself the winner.

Second flight, a while later saw Simon's EDF disappear over the northern hedge after a aileron detached. Take a walk Simon and don't be too long!  His EDF was recovered and in flyable condition.

Between flights and charging Martin grabbed the chance to let Jon Tappin maiden his new Sukhoi SU26 - Wild Hare in Honda trim.  It started but refused to run properly so some carb tweaking ensued.  Finally it was running and took the air really nice.  Jon put it through it's paces, torque hanging, snap rolls and verticals to check it out.  It flew and took it all painlessly.  Apparently the initial problem of poor starting maybe down to dirt in fuel feed reed valve.

Come mid-afternoon many called it a day due to the fact we were going to be at a surprise birthday bash for Big Dave.  Beer, Karaoke, more beer!

Although the greying skies didn't do Martin's Sukhoi the justice it deserves the video available in the Video Library, although the sound of the wind howling over the mike is annoying I thought it better not to overdub with music this time.   Watch Sukhoi SU26 Maiden Video HD
